Songwriter

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

I got an email from John, Thane’s guitar teacher, after today’s lesson:

The kids got to choose what song they wanted to film. Thane wrote his own….
That’s not a bad thing!

The Great Nashville Duck Race 2010

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

Imagine 10,000 rubber ducks dropping from a bridge into the river, then racing down to the finish line about a quarter of a mile away. Then imagine that once they hit the water, there is not enough current, so speed boats zoom around them, corralling the ducks into the netting. This is the Great Nashville Duck Race.

We arrived late…shocker…so had missed the duck drop, but did see a pic of it from a guy next to us. It was a blistering autumn day and I was in a sweater still from the hockey game and Jay was decked out in a long sleeved Steelers shirt. I don’t know if that was design or subliminal, but Steelers fans were swarming Nashville downtown in prep for Sunday’s Steelers versus Titans game.

We don’t know who won the $10,000 grand prize for coming in first. We had 6 ducks in the race….maybe!

Fire Safety Day

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

Saturday was Fire Safety Day. With all the activities of the day, we were hoping to make it, but did not know how to fit it in. Turned out, as we were pulling up to our “Awesome Job at Termites Celebration Breakfast” at Cracker Barrel, we saw a Fire Truck sitting outside of Krispy Kreme. I always think incentives (like going on a firetruck) will make for better behavior during an event (outing, sleeping, etc) but apparently I have learned nothing in my 3+ years of parenthood. OK, so it was actually one of the best Cracker Barrel experiences we have had (Rachel’s probably thinking that doesn’t take much!) but the kids were still itching to get out.

When we did trek to the truck, the kids loved being able to go all around and inside and speak to the firemen.

Things we learned at Fire Safety Day:

  • *Practice Fire Drills with the kids so they know what the sound of a smoke detector and what it means

*If a smoke detector goes off, one parent should get kids while other parent figures out the source of the smoke

*Sleep with bedroom doors closed, in case of fire, it keeps fire out of your room

*Teach kids to touch door first and don’t open it if it is hot
