In full get up, a t-shirt, jeans, socks, sandals (cute, I know), and windbreaker with hood, Thane graduated from swim class yesterday. There was quite the audience to see it, too. Gia and Pappou were there (Kennette had arranged it so that they would see his big finale) and Kim and Chance, and Erica and Alexa (His teachers from school and their kids) came to watch as well. It was great to have so many people cheering him on.
As has been the case recently, he was waving at Kennette from the sides while we waited our turn and then eagerly went out to her. He was a little weirded out by being in such bulky clothes but after a few practice runs, got over that pretty quickly.
She then started the tests that he has been working up to for the last 7 weeks.
First, she mocked him falling in to the pool from his side. He went under and resurfaced, going into his rest position (on his back). She then did it head first and backwards. He did all to a tee and much applause.
She flipped him over at one point, out of the water and in to a sort of backflip to disorient him. I could hear the gasp from his teachers who had never seen this before. He resurfaced, had a bit of trouble since his hood flooded with water, but successfully got to the rest position with no help from Kennette.
Kennette then put his hood over his face. That caused some cries and confusion, but he got it off and rested. There were then some cries but he was able to take the jacket off of his face again with no issue. We were all amazed. He swam to the side, to the step, and got in rest position wonderfully. He was a real super star and we are so proud! We are also thrilled that he is now safe in the water, supervised of course, but no floaties needed here! Chance, Kim’s son, even got the bug and now wants to take lessons!
When we got him undressed he was soaked to the bone. His diaper (not a swim one) was 10 times its normal size. Jay and I could not believe he could swim with being weighted down like that. He was quite the ham and loved the photos and video taken of him. We are set for one more day of swim class but are going to miss this afternoon activity.
Oh, and the other day, Thane got the distinction of being her youngest student to jump into the pool to start class.
