MLK Day
Thane had off from school today for Martin Luther King Day so I decided to play hookey. It was glorious. I always said I could not not work, but given the opportunity to do what I did today…it would be mighty appealing!
After seeing daddy off, Thane and I spent some time on the playmat and got some tummy time and more practice crawling. He keeps bouncing, so we are definitely seeing progress. We sat in our new highchair, Consumer Reports recommended the Evenflo, and ate some breakfast and then went down (not so peacefully) for a nap while I did the laundry. After that it was off to the Frist Center for a reading of a children’s Martin Luther King Storybook.
Unfortunately, we arrived right at 10:30, when it was scheduled to start, and the place was packed out the door. I decided it was better not to stand outside in a boring hallway and try to hear so we went to the children’s working area, ArtQuest. In there, Thane got to stand at a low table and play with blocks, look at a 3 panel mirror, which he loved, and feel different textures. It was a little old for him and very busy but he was enraptured with all the activity and new sights.
After we had our fill there, we went to the museum and Thane got an art lesson. From me. An engineer. Well, at least it was from reading the walls. He really enjoyed listening to the quotes on the walls and would get a big smile on his face each time I read one aloud.
After the museum, we headed to lunch with Daddy at Sitar. Thane even tried some spinach and lentils they had on the buffet.
After lunch, we headed to the mall for what we thought was to be a quick in and out and ended up being a 4 hour visit. To make a long story short, Bombay went out of business. Today was THE LAST DAY. We got a barrister’s desk, gorgeous, originally $999 for $49! Problem is that 2 of the drawers are losing their varnish…badly. I am sure a little elbow grease and stain will resolve it, but if anyone has ideas, let me know.
Then we caught a few more sales at Gymboree (nothing of interest) and The Children’s Place (3 very nice sweaters and a lined pair of jeans for less than $20) and headed to Sears for a portrait session. While we waited, we rode on the carousel…Thane did not quite know what to think and I felt a little foolish but I think he ended up having fun seeing everything spinning by.
The pics came out super. After all the angst with using a professional photog and not getting phenomenal results, it was a pleasure to walk in and out and get some quality pics in the process.
Jay met us when we were choosing the poses and then we headed to pick up the desk and head to the grocery store and home.
The lesson I have learned from my day off…it is much, much cheaper for me to work…I spend too much money when left to my own devices outside!!!

I think we should have those hookey days about once a month…that way you have the rest of the month of work to recover from what you spent on your day off! haha
