First Day of School

Read Trust your instincts to find out how we got here.

Thane started his first day of school today. It was WONDERFUL! His teacher called me last night to introduce herself and tell me what to bring. She was so nice and so excited to have him in her class.

We packed up his little backpack and headed to school this morning. When we got there, we heard that today was music day. We later found out that Bob Dylan’s former guitarist came and played the guitar for the class. We met some of the parents, who seemed very nice. When we dropped by at lunch, Thane was having a good nap on the cot. When we picked him up, he was being held and loved on by one of the teachers.

Here is what some of the highlights of his day were:

Played with mobile (activity center)
Went outside 2x (and napped on a blanket)
Listened to music (which he was awake for and apparently liked)

Also, I was told that everyone loved his name. Then we talked about Parents Night Out at Boundry and I was asked to be a Room Mom, which I readily accepted.

Have I mentioned how much I love this place? They did a great job with him today and we can tell by his disposition. Last night he was fidgety, tonight he is concked out!

Trust your instincts

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

All I have to say is trust your instincts. I was never over the moon about sending Thane to KinderCare. It was always an interim solution, but not one I was crazy about. Yesterday (Monday) was his first day there, and as it turns out, also his last.

When we arrived, we were met by nobody at the desk, a closed security door, and a very open office door, that led to the infant area. When asked about it, we were told that was just “because” and it is usually not open.

In the room, we were greeted by a very nice older woman but told that a) Thane would be in the older infant room, so he would not get out of the crib much for fear of trampling and b) he might not get changed at lunch because they were “so busy.”

Jay and I were then given the joke of a security code, which I told them was very unsafe, paid, and headed to work very upset.

When we got to work, Jay told me to find alternate care.

I called a nanny and Montessori. Oma was so nice and welcomed Thane in earlier than the school year start. Thank God.

When we headed back we were again greeted by an empty front desk and an open door to the infant area. Thirty minutes earlier than we were supposed to be there, I headed through the open door (not the coded one), into the infant room, and picked up my baby. A new girl who was not there when we dropped him off and who has never met me, asked, “Oh, is that your baby?” and then let me leave with him. Appalling. I managed to “steal” my own baby. I was never asked for ID or any proof of who I was.

I spoke to the Director and she “never had so many complaints from a parent before.” Well, chica, maybe you should have. We got a refund, minus one day. My calls to the head office have thus far gone unanswered.

On a lighter note, here are some fun pics of Thane from this weekend.

Been a busy week

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

I can finally pause to take a breath and write some updates. It has been a busy week (or so…)

Lisa Marie and Gail’s visit was wonderful. It was so great to see them and spend time with them. Sometimes I get very sad that I don’t get to hang out with them on a regular basis, life was just so much simpler in Barnard 4.

Girls’ night out was a blast…we headed to Tayst for drinks first then to Bricktops for dinner. Yumm. I will let the photos speak for themselves.
